that will be one hundred and fifty dollars please

so I've been saving a little bit of scratch here and there in order to boost up my music software capabilities. I've mostly been considering the Record for Reason owners upgrade, which nets you Reason 5 and Record 1.5 for free when they begin selling in late August.

However, when I get right down to it, the same amount of money will obtain a legal copy of Cubase Essential 5, which not only can do all of the audio that Record brings, but also hosts VSTs, thus allowing me to finally use the VST synths I've paid for without having to run the crappy freeware VST host I've been using.

Cubase Essential 5 will also run on my ancient laptop, whereas the new Record/Reason stuff will require me to shell out laptop upgrade money.

thoughts?

  1. Its hard to offer or receive any advice on this stuff. It all comes down to what app helps you make the most music. Cost issues aside, I've had Logic for almost as long as I've had Reason and my ratio of songs made in it compared to Reason is something like 1:80. And, that's a pretty conservative estimate. The techniques you can use and the interface in Reason are just a better fit for me. Its not that Logic isn't great, because it is, I just don't feel as comfortable there.

Its a tough call to make. $150 plus a new computer is a lot. :/
