The man behind Charlie 'Spacer Woman'

The first time I came across the haunting and incredible Charlie 'Spacer Woman' record was on a DJ Hell mixed set. Initially I thought it was another one of those modern versions of the classic italo disco sound that the Bunker and Viewlexx guys were so adept at creating and putting out in the 2000s. It wasn't until much later that I learned it was produced in the early 80s.

Here's a track that stands the test of time. All the elements are in place, and everything is perfectly offset by the brilliant broken English, slightly off-key vocal. Who is this girl that is my spacer woman? Why doesn't she want me to worry about her? I guess she just wanted to love me and not hurt me.....I was hooked, and the only copy I could track down was some bad 128K mp3 rip off of pre-corporate Napster.

Fast forward a few years, and I stumbled across the original pressing sitting in the crates at Denver's Wax Trax vinyl store. The day was a joyous occasion which my fellow vinyl hunting nerds will understand, but I digress.

Recently I decided to dig a little to find out more about who produced this incredible record. It wasn't a big surprise to find out that Maurice Cavalieri was a disco producer - you can still hear the ghosts of giant disco balls and platform shoes in 'Spacer Woman', but what was really fun was listening to one of his bridge tracks.. where he was just getting his footing towards a new sound.

I'm posting three tracks here below, the first is one of his disco projects, the next the bridge track I was referring to, and finally the masterful 'Spacer Woman'. Special shouts to the Italobot blog, which I highly recommend if you're a fan of the italo-disco sound, and where I garnered the info on the pre 'Spacer Woman' tracks.

Firefly - Love Is Gonna Be On Your Side (full on early 80s disco)

Nexus - Stand Up (the bridge track.... between disco and something new......)

Charlie - Spacer Woman (the italo disco classic)
