Rabid progressive house stans, jacking for beats and blatant rip offs in electronic music
There are a lot of great records out on the legendary R and S record label, and one of the ultimate collections in my opinion was their compilation 'In Order To Dance Volume 5', which I copped years and years ago at Austin's Alien Records when it was still a small shop off 15th street.
From that compilation, one record in particular really stood out for me, called 'The Wipe' by Teste. There was something about those descending and ascending dronish stabs; their texture, the verbs washing in and out of each other, their grit that really spoke to me.
Fast forward a decade later, and I came across a cut on Dave Seaman's Global Underground 'Melbourne' mix CD that sounded remarkably familiar. I couldn't quite place it, because it'd been years, and something kept nagging at me to haul out the vinyl from the 'In Order to Dance' compilation. Sure enough, there it was. That cut on the GU mix sounded exactly like the original Teste 'The Wipe', albeit slower with replaced sounds - but same structure, same sound design, it was like looking at a picture through a dirty window - you could make it out, but it wasn't quite right.
Because I'm masochistic like that, I dared to brave the waters of the caustic stan breeding ground that is the GU forums and pointed this blatant beat jacking out. Little was I prepared for the outraged stannery that followed, with one well known member of the board in particular ripping me a new one in between suggesting "how dare I and that there were no similarities between the tracks, and that I was daft to post about it".
Really? Maybe I'm old school, but where I came from biting was not allowed. And sadly, since 2002 when this GU mix came out, I've seen more and more of this going on. It's okay to be inspired by producer forefathers of yesteryear, but a blatant jack like that without credit is not kosher my friends.
I'm still seeing this kind of s--t happen on a regular basis. The hell with "stop snitching", it's all about "stop biting"
