I've featured several releases from Holland's Drvg Cvltvre on City of Bass in the past - it's the convergence of a unique sound, that ever elusive 100% pure unkut dope factor that I'm always looking for when writing about music and it's an artist who is doing something different - that in itself doesn't mean much because there's plenty of artists creating avante garde sounds. But this isn't endless noodling in the studio - this is kopfnicken, this is play-on-repeat, this is turn-it-up loud business.
When I first started listening to the Drvg Cvltvre sound, my immediate thought was I need to pitch this up when playing it in sets, and it's true: these records would energize the dance floor at normal techno speed with an up-for-it crowd - it's almost like the sound of raves of yesteryear, but seen through a filter projecting from darkened bunkers from the future. But as I listen to these records more and more, I absolutely get why he's slowing everything down - all the elements breathe together, move in unison and there's a certain cohesion that you wouldn't otherwise get - I've never seen an artist name match it's sound so succintly - it's drug culture.
Simply put, this is a brilliant, unique dope sound. Artists like this, reinventing themselves, pushing forward is why I keep at it even after all these years. It's producers like this that energize me, that keep me going with City of Bass, with the label and still mixing. Drvg Cvltvres' latest is 'Everything Oblivion', and it's out now on Radio Kobayashi. Recommended.
