to mix or not to mix?

2009. the future is now, but its not as crazy as those sci-fi novels in the 50s made it out to be.

I recently read a post from a digital DJing blog and the writer mentioned a prediction (or hope rather) that in 2009 producers would start releasing not just tracks, but stems... for the digital DJ to manipulate on the dance floor.

I dont really feel good about that, just like I dont feel super good about the direction digital DJing has taken the music. My point of contention? not everybody is Sasha or Richie Hawtin, and just because you know how to DJ doesnt mean you understand how to create a groove. I cant tell you how many times I've gone out in recent times and wound up sorely dissapointed. Why?

In the old days, a DJ worth his salt would create a groove for the dance floor, and keep people dancing. Now it seems like you've got guys with 20 clip set ups going nuts with the technology and ignoring whats going on the floor. I'm not a luddite, I'm for technology, but lets not forget the the essence of DJing - keeping a groove and keeping the vibe going. If you're up there mixing bits and pieces every four bars, what you're doing is avant-garde performance art, not Djing.

There are exceptions to the rule of course, but so far its not looking good. I hope to hear better!
