I recently cruised around town late at night listening to the various tracks we've released on Vocode to some pro-mastered commercial releases and wound up feeling frustrated. Mostly because I've spent a lot of time studying and experimenting, and while my tracks sound a hell of a lot better than even 6 months ago, I'm still not getting that bump.
I'm not worried about releases we've already dropped, because to be honest you can fix it in the mix as a DJ - the EQ's were my friends for years when I spent time behind the decks in the DJ booth, but in 2009 you really have to have that "bump" to stand out. I'm dropping deeper into some mastering and mixing tutorials again, but it really is a sort of black art...
