DJ Mix : The Seventh Day (inspired by Paul Oakenfold's Goa Mix)

If you've been a long-time fan of dance music, and trance in particular, I'm going to assume that you've heard of Paul Oakenfold's legendary Goa Mix, first broadcast in 1994 as part of BBC Radio 1's Essential Mix. If you're a fan of Paul Oakenfold, I bet you've also heard a copy of his mix CD, Perfecto Fluoro, which also was broadcast on Radio 1 as a follow up to the Goa Mix, in 1996.

These mixes were legendary for three reasons: flawless programming that told a story, track selection, and bridges between the trance records via his selection of sound track material. I always had wished for a third edition to this mix series, but as the 90s progressed and Oakenfold's output (and trance music in general) turned more and more into euro-pop, I realized chances were slim to none. He tried to replicate the vibe with a few other mix CDs years later, but they never quite hit the spot.

I decided at some point to create my own, mostly because I had a period where I was absolutely obsessed with the perfecto fluoro and goa sound; I say goa specifically, because I feel that the psy-trance scene represented an all together different sound.

I spent a good chunk of time crafting this two hour mix, I'd venture to say about 5 months total, if memory serves correctly..... various versions, testing out records, replacing records, analyzing mix points and key-mixing.... the end result was for me, cathartic and in my biased opinion, a worthy tribute to those original mixes. The album cover art below is modified from the original cassette album art. I printed two versions of this mix, one for America and one for Germany, as I had a trip planned so I pressed 100 copies with the German language. I passed them out all over Germany at various club nights, raves and once even passed one to a 24hr gas station attendant at 4 AM somewhere off the autobahn (I figured he might dig it since he was pumping techno music to pass the time).

Aside from the physical copies, the mix had a pretty good original digital run, with around 3500 downloads while I was still counting - that's nothing to folks releasing digital mixes these days, but it was something for the time (around the year 2000) and something to me. It even got me a gig to a Portland festival, as the girlfriend of one of the promoters dug the vibes. I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed making it, and thanks for sticking with me for this long-long write up :)
